Elo-based simulations for each World Cup group (A-D): Looks like the expanded format (weaker pot 4 teams + most 3rd placed teams going through) means that pot 2/3 teams are a lot more likely to progress than in previous editions if they avoided drawing a strong pot 4 team.

interesting format in the u17 world cup KO stage - teams are ranked based on group performance and seeded accordingly, instead of the permutation system at 24 team tournaments (+ the 2026 wc). seems more fair + incentivizes teams not to throw in the towel in dead rubber games
