Tiananmen is the most important film in the series. I Have Graduated (April 22) is a close second, and only 90 minutes. I also think you might be interested in Reform School Students (April 21) since it was made by Chinese Christians and faith plays an interesting role in it. Plenty of options.

@samcmac Well … thing is, I work weekday evenings. But I can probably get a day off. The Tiananmen doc the most worthy? Or one or more of the others?

Incredible and long, long overdue news for one of the very best films of the 1980s

I mean that both in the sense of patronizing our series—we had a GREAT turnout at all the screenings—and because your comments (in public and private discussions) kept proving what I’ve always believed to be true: that there is a certain kind of Chinese art that necessarily relies on subtlety and layers of meaning to express its ideas, such that no one researcher could hope to grasp it all. Which is to say that it’s not enough for academics to write on these works - the films need to be engaged with by diverse audiences to really draw out their various dimensions. Whole new ways of thinking about them were opened up this week. Thank you.

Back stateside. Big thanks to everyone who came out for #unseenhistories in Berlin. It was so rewarding to finally get these films in front of an audience - especially such an engaged and thoughtful one. You helped give the work new life.

@NairYasmin Is the publication prestigious? You’ve been kind of vague on that point

Checked my notes: less than $50! And they are a VERY prestige publication.

I turned down a prestige publication because they would not pay me more than about $50. And they were nice and complimentary, but also said to me, "Well, you know, all these Incredibly Famous People write for us at that rate." THIS is how we end up replicating exploitation.
