Very huge AI news showing China might be running away with AI.. OpenRouter’s data shows developers are using Chinese LLMs more than US ones more and more each week!
This is about real developer traffic (who only ship AI products based on cost/reliability/intelligence). Soooo .. this all means more Chinese models are using up more tokens on a platform designed for fast switching between providers… meaning three big things:
1. switching costs are low
2. price/performance is crucial
3. “good models that are cheap” > “best models that are expensive” in many real workloads
So basically this isn’t just “China good AI.” It’s saying China is competing like a genuine superpower, but for inference. And if you’re building an app, you don’t need the “world’s smartest model,” all you need is a model that delivers the result at scale without destroying your margins.
Yet If you’re a top US lab, the temptation is to monetise with higher prices but this of course gives fewer customers and creates an opening for ....China who can take it all (and absolutely are now)
