@BarbBanfieldRN They are "rules" which help explain how utterances are interpreted in context. If I say "I have 2 kids" when I actually have 3, it violates the "maxim" that listeners expect speakers to not leave out relevant info. You might wonder why I am not including the 3rd kid. It's weird.

When I was in the Air Force in Italy, President George H. W. Bush (who I did not vote for) was in the country. There was a big thing where both he spoke and the President of Italy spoke. They asked two people from each squadron (or equivalent in other branches) to be in a parade. I was one of the two selected from mine. So, I got to march in a parade for the POTUS. It was pretty cool, even if I didn't vote for him. He was my President, and they were honoring the anniversary of when Mussolini was ousted and fascism ended in Italy. He went around and greeted us, and I got to shake hands with him. I thought it was an honor. The President was the President, whether you voted for him or not. I was thinking of this the last few days because of the doctored video the RNC posted to make it look like Biden was shitting his pants. In such a solemn moment, on such an anniversary, they have to try and smear their own President and lie about him. And get offended that he talked about defeating fascism. These are the people who claim to be Patriots. But they aren't. Real patriots can set aside their politics for a few hours to appreciate what their country has done.
