Here is another claims study from Germany! @FLareyre @AAU_Thrombosis @VenerMa @EJVES_ESVS We used a large nationwide unselected dataset including 22,637 individual people (42% women) who underwent either carotid endarterectomy (#CEA) or carotid artery stenting (#CAS) between 2008 and 2017 to determine 5 year mortality and stroke rates. Thereof, two third were asymptomatic and almost 80% underwent open surgical CEA. The current study found higher event rates in some subgroups than previously reported in landmark trials, raising questions about the applicability of trial data to everyday clinical practice. The combined rate for any stroke & mortality at 1 year was 6.3% (#CEA of asymptomatic stenosis), 8.7% (#CAS of asymptomatic stenosis), and 12.5% (urgent #CAS of acute stroke patients). After 5 years, the overall stroke rate was 7.4% after #CEA and 9.0% after #CAS.
