So when you say "built" what do you mean? If renting gpus from somewhere like vastai then the hard parts are mostly architecture decisions and coming up with the money to float it until it is self-sustaining. There is another angle where with 500-600k upfront investment one should get some insane annual rate of return close to 60% (assuming buying h100 sxm cards and renting them to the collective at the same median rate as they're available on vastai). The actual markup over inference is pretty insane and highly profitable unless one is also doing r&d and training. When people say that "LLM labs are subsidized by venture capital investment" they should actually be saying that the r&d and training costs > income from pay-per-token and subscriptions. The code to kind of tie it all together like a unified api endpoint and basic usage tracking is almost trivial in comparison to those two core problems.

not to doompost, but AI lab workers should be realistic about something that endangers their future: until a single one of them can look at the lives of the people who lost their jobs because of AI and actually have a hint of jealousy for the unemployed person's newfound "freedom", they are going to face increasing political headwinds, malicious rhetoric, and actual violence. basically, we will need a cultural shift where being employed and working becomes widely viewed as low-status. we are in the opposite culture right now. we have a workaholic nation where if you're not employed or working in some way you lose your health insurance, housing, food, and all the other base digital luxuries of modern life. many are right to feel animosity towards something they feel is life-ruining, because without explicitly defined social safety nets, it literally is. we're in an exciting time, and clearly there is about to be an enormous amount of abundance in many things. but it's also clear the abundance will be extremely lopsided for a long time, with most of it going towards people who are willing and able to take advantage of it. we should expect this style of distribution to create enormous friction within american society
