Did you know? Across the Netherlands, small biogas domes are popping up in public parks — transforming café leftovers, plant matter, and even dog waste into clean energy that powers nearby street lamps. Each dome is a compact methane reactor, about the size of a playground slide. Inside, bacteria naturally break down organic waste to produce biogas, which is piped to nearby methane-powered lanterns. The soft, warm glow lights pathways every night — powered entirely by what would otherwise be trash. The initiative began in Rotterdam as an eco-experiment and soon became part of a larger “Circular City” plan, aimed at achieving zero waste and energy self-sufficiency. Locals can even feed the domes with biodegradable waste using community drop-off bins.
