Why did Mandelson fail his security vetting? Why did it not stop him becoming Britain’s most powerful diplomat? Why did we only hear about this yesterday? Does our ‘clueless’ (so he claims) Prime Minister know anything about anything? Or is he just a bare-faced liar?

@piersmorgan @Keir_Starmer Piers. Arsenal aside . The man is a disingenuous fraud . He avoids scrutiny at PMQs . His pious sanctimonious grandstanding has come back to haunt him . Not fit for office . He’s not alone there ….

Keir, you’re a good man. A decent man. An Arsenal fan (always a good test of a man). When you did Life Stories, I found your remarkable journey to the top of British politics very inspiring. But this can’t go on. For the good of the country, resign. ⁦@Keir_Starmer

We now have the Government response: Neither the PM nor 10 Downing Street nor the Cabinet Office knew the Foreign Office had decided to ignore the fact Mandelson had failed his security vetting. Call it the ‘know-nothing’ government. But it leaves a major question unanswered: why would the FO take it on itself to make such a huge judgement call — and not inform/consult Downing Street? What was in it for the FO? It hadn’t even necessarily wanted Mandy, unlike Starmer and the 10 Downing Street operation. Doesn’t add up.
Andrew Neil@afneil

BREAKING NEWS (with the potential to be massive): The Guardian reveals Peter Mandelson failed advanced security vetting before becoming US ambassador. He was initially denied developed vetting clearance in January 2025 - weeks after Keir Starmer had officially announced his appointment. Foreign Office was ‘encouraged’ to deploy a rarely-used power to override the recommendation from security officials. The Government promised total transparency on the Mandelson affair after MPs forced it to release of a batch of documents about the process. But nothing it has released reveals this startling fact. Indeed, Starmer has always insisted Mandelson was subject to 'security vetting, carried out independently by the security services, which is an intensive exercise that gave him clearance for the role'. Developing …

It’s bad enough Labour MPs are flogging sex toys in Parliament this week. But if Reeves isn’t funding our armed forces because 50% of them aren’t female, she is unfit for government. This is a new low. Labour have no idea how to protect us and know nothing about defence.
Jason Groves@JasonGroves1

No 10 is *not disputing* extraordinary claim in @spectator that Rachel Reeves is blocking defence funding because of the MoD’s poor record on ‘gender parity’ issues. Asked twice, the PM’s spokesman declines to comment on ‘speculation’…

@afneil . Morning Andrew . A lot is written about energy security . The Times has an article about potential food shortages . What is your view on food security ? The farmers are clearly not keen on growing food due to Government red tape and other anti agricultural policies ?

@afneil Andrew . Let there be no doubt your interview just gone on LBC sums up the total shambles of this so called ceasefire . A clear and precise surgical dismantling of any credible sense that USA has “won” anything .

@afneil Mr Healey actually seems like a good bloke . But unfortunately that does not cut the mustard as Defence Secretary. Especially at times of war . We need someone who fights idiots like Miliband for more budget and wins . It will take years to sort out this mess . Embarrassing.

When Charles de Gaulle led France, he treated public money as something untouchable. At the Élysée Palace, there was a strict rule for him: no personal expense could ever be paid for by the state. His wife, Yvonne, kept a small notebook in which she meticulously recorded all family expenses — from food and electricity to clothing and even soap. At the end of each month, she would send a check to the state treasury, reimbursing every last cent. Once, an accountant remarked that this was not really necessary. She calmly replied: “Everything that is not public is personal. And for personal matters, we pay ourselves.” This principle applied without exception. Their children and grandchildren were not allowed to use official cars for private matters. De Gaulle himself refused any privileges of office: he paid his own bills at the palace — even for the smallest things, such as soap or family meals. Moreover, he did not use his presidential salary, living only on his military pension. After his death, there was no wealth or luxury left behind — only a modest house in Colombey-les-Deux-Églises, purchased before the war. It is said that he would sometimes personally send money to the treasury if he suspected that any personal expense might have accidentally been covered by the state budget. This was not a formality. It was a principle. ✨ An example of true integrity, honor, and responsibility in public service.

@afneil There’s a shock . Something stinks at the top of this Government. It all leads back to one person . The PM. Who consistently dodges questions , blames others and takes zero responsibility. One of these things will eventually get him . However what comes next is Angela. Doomed UK.

This whole McSweeney phone theft business is beginning to stink. The timing is incredibly convenient for a government that wants to cover up. Why did McSweeney report the theft to the police himself?Surely Downing Street security should have been immediately alerted — and they would handle it from there. Did McSweeney want to establish a record of him reporting it? Why did McSweeney never correct the police when it was clear they thought the theft had been in the East End and, of course, it happened in Westminster. Did McSweeney relish the confusion? Why did McSweeney not make clear the national security significance of it being his phone to the police? Was he worried they’d then take it seriously, unlike most phones thefts?

@afneil Andrew . Can you tell me the point of PMQs. Starmer never ever answers a question . This week Farage asks if there is an immigration Plan B ? All he got in return was Starmer slagging off Reform . Its pathetic . Career politicians , no gravitas . No wonder turnout is low.

I am very wary of reports that the UK is now within range of Iranian ballistic missiles. But if the reports are true, let’s be in no doubt: the UK has no defences against such missiles. No dedicated national ballistic missile defence (BMD) system for intercepting intermediate- or intercontinental-range threats aimed at the homeland. No ground-based interceptors (like US THAAD or Patriot systems in Europe) deployed in Britain for this purpose. In theory our T-45 warships could provide some cover. But most are currently undeployable or not in UK waters. Leaving us defenceless from ballistic missile attack. Another massive military failure of the political class of all recent governments.

This is not good news given what will now happen to UK finances as a result of the war on Iran. And perhaps we can have some silence from all those who piled to exaggerate the significance of January’s freak figures. The UK borrowed a higher than expected £14.3bn in February. The shortfall between government spending and income was £2.2bn higher than in the same month a year ago and far above the £8.5bn forecast by economists polled by Reuters. At a time of peril for nation’s finances it is frightening to have R Reeves as Chancellor.

@afneil Regardless of the debacle of funding , and numbers of ships. When you see them deploy such as Dragon right now it still gives a sense of patriotism . I recall the 1982 task force setting sail. What a sight . Sadly unlikely ever to be witnessed again. Grey bean counters to blame .

The T45s are destroyers and have anti-ballistic missile capabilities. We were meant to have 12. We built six. No more after 2013. They have been bedevilled with problems. We are currently building six T26s. None yet deployed. They are sophisticated anti-sub ships with only limited anti-missile capabilities. Replacement for the T45s — the T83 (I think that’s the number) is over a decade away.
Tim Oates@tim_oates1

@afneil We do have numerous new frigates in the pipeline (not enough) but the T45’s have been plagued with problems since they first sailed and Blair cutting the order of them from 12 to 6 was reckless.
