@srijanapiya17 @PikettyWIL Absolutely. In my new book Era Of India there are several chapters on reparations — from the transatlantic slave trade to colonial drain from India. It’s a pity more people aren’t doing more on this important global issue with justice at its heart

@MinhazMerchant @PikettyWIL Indeed. As Professor Piketty mentioned, if a powerhouse like India was to demand a wealth tax or reparations, it would bring the issue to the centre of discussions. After all, it is the heart of the matter.

@srijanapiya17 @PikettyWIL Yes Srijana…Reparations for colonialism & slavery are key to justice. The West avoids the subject — it dreads the R word — and only the Caribbean Community (CARACOM) & the African Union (AU) are seriously doing something about it.

Piketty is right to say India’s growth ambition is valid. But that is only the beginning of the argument. The more relevant question is whether India can grow without reproducing the most unequal, wasteful, and socially violent features of Western capitalism.
