A new documentary dropped last week claiming $BTC was built by two people, not one.
It's called "Finding Satoshi" and it's the result of a four-year investigation.
The conclusion: Satoshi Nakamoto was a shared pseudonym used by Hal Finney and Len Sassaman.
Brian Armstrong called it "the most thoughtful take on this subject I've seen out there."
Here's the forensic case they make:
- Satoshi's activity ran mainly 6am-10pm PST. Of all the suspects the investigators profiled, only Finney and Sassaman matched that window.
- Finney had a two-month gap in his PGP Corp. commits right before $BTC's genesis block in January 2009. He built in C++ on Windows, Bitcoin's exact stack. He created RPOW, a direct precursor to $BTC, and received the first Bitcoin transaction ever sent.
- Sassaman was living in Europe at the time, which lines up with Satoshi's timezone patterns and the British spellings scattered through the white paper. His writing matches the prose sections while Finney appears to have handled the code.
- Both knew each other through the PGP community in 2008. Bram Cohen, who built BitTorrent, said their combined profile was a precise Satoshi match.
Which would help answer the question: why hasn't anyone moved Satoshi's 1.1M $BTC stack?
Both men died before they could.
Sassaman by suicide in 2011. Finney from ALS in 2014.
Hal's widow Fran denied he was Satoshi, though she acknowledged he may have contributed code and edits.
The filmmakers don't claim this is settled.
But they're the first to put forensic timeline analysis, linguistic matching, and expert testimony in the same room and have them all say the same name.
