Walk into hospital with alcohol withdrawal.
They will tell you to quit drinking.
Walk in with lung damage from forty years of smoking.
They will tell you to quit smoking.
Walk in with type 2 diabetes, the disease of dysregulated blood sugar, the textbook condition caused by too much glucose passing through a system that can no longer handle it.
They will hand you a tray of cornflakes, fruit juice, white toast, and a small pot of jam.
Then a nurse will come round with the insulin trolley and act surprised when your numbers go up.
Every other condition gets the obvious advice.
Diabetes gets the food that caused it.
