If you haven't already, please check out my latest episode with Joanna Barbousas from La Trobe University. It's so inspiring and shows what's actually possible with focussed leadership. She is leading the way on transforming teacher education! Link below

@Scott_Wiener @UAW @uaw_4811 I have tried to talk to you about need to modify the ed code to make sure Algebra I is offered in every middle school. Currently the ed code has a loophole which allowed SF and Oak to remove it. Please engage because this is very important. Needs to be clearly defined in code

Science is a pillar of American prosperity, in addition to saving countless lives. Trump is trying to destroy it. We need to rebuild it. That’s why I’m authoring California’s science bond, in partnership with @UAW @uaw_4811 & a massive coalition of universities, scientists & health advocates. California must lead on science & we will do so.

Mathematics is full of hierarchical dependencies. Weaknesses do not just sit quietly in the background. They behave more like cracks in a foundation: the higher you build, the more stress they create.

Is 1/3 = 1/third? Is 1/2 = 1/half? We think not. CMF Ch. 3, Number Sense, page 30 (cde.ca.gov/ci/ma/cf/docum…)

For math, John Mighton is the real deal. He knows the math inside and out and he developed a charity to help kids learn it. One of the most humble, honest, and genuine people in this space. Don’t miss his talk at researchED. Honoured to be included as a speaker alongside him.

@Scott_Wiener That's not what's going on. Why do we have such high rate of private school enrollment? Mine went k to 12 SF public but thanks to your buddy Matt Haney, and Richard Carranza, Rachel Norton, Sandra Fewer and many others they drove district into ditch it's still trying to get out.

By 2031, California is projected to lose more than one million K-12 students compared to its peak a decade ago — a drop from 6.3M to 5M. There’s a one-word explanation for this steep fall: Housing Fewer students means school closures, fewer teachers, an older population, a depleted workforce & lower tax revenues. Yet people continue to fight tooth & nail against pretty much every solution for building the huge number of homes we need for our state to thrive. There’s always an excuse — neighborhood character, parking, historic preservation, traffic, views. But, bottom line, we either want a thriving state — one with a growing economy, strong public services & a diverse population, including young people — or we don’t. I vote for a thriving future for California. Here’s the data: nces.ed.gov/programs/diges…

This is exactly what I did in 2015-16 ( her 8th) for daughter who was second delayed cohort in SF. She took Calculus in HS and went to strong STEM college ( WPI). I paid to play. How many under resourced children were left behind? SF left a generation of talent on the table.

The NY Equity Coalition is right. Denying access to 8th grade Algebra I to advanced students is deplorable. It is usually done to avoid tracking. Unless all 8th graders are prepared to take Alg I, schools are hesitant to offer Alg I to only those who are ready. Advantaged families will get Alg I in the marketplace. chalkbeat.org/newyork/2026/0…

🚨I was part of this CBC Newfoundland documentary on math. The story? Students are struggling in math & it's impacting universities. Memorial Univ. (MUN) is even cancelling math classes b/c students don't have the pre-req skills to succeed. We need to look upstream. Thanks to @CBCNL Krissy Holmes for covering: "The Math Problem" Absolutely fantastic comments from MUN's department of mathematics Chair, Ivan Booth, and from university math students. cbc.ca/listen/live-ra…

🚩Red flags: "education is too messy to measure" or "test scores don't capture what matters." These are unfalsifiable claims and blank cheques to say whatever they want is true. Don't accept these arguments.

Consistency does not mean robotic teaching. It means students do not have to win the teacher lottery. A schoolwide literacy commitment should be visible from classroom to classroom. The goal is not sameness for adults; the goal is reliability for students

"Balanced Literacy" is a culture, not just a program. It takes more than rubrics and plans to uproot. Focus on actions, not beliefs.
Assemblymember Robert Carroll@Bobby4Brooklyn

.@GovKathyHochul and I worked together on a “Back to Basics” literacy overhaul rooted in the science of reading. So it’s shocking to see outdated, debunked balanced literacy creeping back into teacher training—after $10M was spent. That’s not what we envisioned. Reading scores are falling. Kids are falling behind. That’s why I introduced A.78, the Right to Read Act—to set statewide standards for evidence-based literacy, ensure real teacher training, and end the patchwork that’s failing our students. No more grey area. We know what works. Structured, sequential, cumulative literacy—grounded in the five pillars—works for all students. Guessing from pictures and context clues works for no one. Literacy is foundational. We must get this right. hechingerreport.org/new-york-ten-m…
