On September 6, 1995, Jaswant Singh Khalra was abducted and killed by security forces in Punjab. A human rights hero, Khalra brought to light the stories of thousands of Sikhs disappeared and killed by the Indian state. #Challengethedarkness

Thank you @BaazNewsOrg for giving me the space to share my thoughts on behalf of the Manmeet Singh Bhullar Foundation. This work has taken nearly a decade. Up until now we’ve done it with our heads down. But there comes a point when misinformation requires you to speak up.

Please see our statement responding to a Globe and Mail story relating to Minister Sajjan’s role in the rescue of Afghan religious minorities. As the NGO that has spent nearly 10 years helping this population, we are disappointed in the false narrative this article has created.

Take some time to speak to your elders, and learn about what they went through — because Sikh experiences are Canadian experiences, and we have them every single day.

Since 1906 Sikhs have been making incredible contributions to our country, but it was never easy for us. We must keep continuing to break down the systemic barriers faced by Sikhs and all racialized people in Canada. Happy Sikh Heritage Month!

Thank you @CraigBaird for taking the time to share this. Manmeet owned his identity as a Sikh, Calgarian, Albertan and Canadian with immense pride. We hope his story makes so many other stories possible. Happy Sikh Heritage Month. #nicetomanmeetyou
Craig Baird - Canadian History Ehx@CraigBaird

It is Sikh Heritage Month and I am exploring the history of Sikh-Canadians in Canada. Today, it is the story of Manmeet Singh Bhullar! Born in Calgary in 1980, Bhullar was active in the community, founding Inspire, a youth organization. He established the campaign Walking Hunger Away & raised money for the Calgary Health Region. For his work, he received the Alberta Centennial Medal and the Athabasca Leadership Award. Bhullar was an organizer for the leadership campaign of Jim Prentice in 2003. In 2008, Bhullar was elected to the Alberta Legislature, becoming the youngest MLA. He then became the youngest politician in Canada to serve as a parliamentary assistant. On Oct. 12, 2008, he was appointed Minister of Service Alberta, making him the first turbaned Sikh to hold a ministerial position. He is credited with the final mile initiative that brought high-speed internet to 98% of Albertans. He was widely praised for his work. As Minister of Human Services from 2013-2014, Bhullar's ministry invested in mental health supports, hosted the first Alberta Minister's Forum on Child Sexual Abuse & empowered families to speak up about their experiences in the child intervention system. He then served as the Minister of Infrastructure from 2014 to 2015. In the 2015 election, he was one of only 10 PC MLAs to be returned to the Legislature. Sadly, on Nov. 23, 2015, while helping a stranded motorist on the Queen Elizabeth Highway between Edmonton and Calgary, he was hit by a semi-truck that lost control on a hill. In 2015, the Manmeet Singh Bhullar Memorial Scholarship was created at the Lester B. Pearson High School, which Bhullar attended. In 2016, a school named for him was opened in Calgary. On Nov. 19, 2016, the Calgary Board of Education Legacy Award was posthumously awarded to Bhullar. One year later, Mount Royal University created the Manmeet Singh Bhullar Inspire Award. #nicetomanmeetyou If you enjoy my Canadian history work, you can support my work with a donation at buymeacoffee.com/craigU *** C'est le Mois du patrimoine sikh et j'explore l'histoire des Canadiens sikhs au Canada.

Happy Gurpurab. Today we mark the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the founder of Sikhism, and recognize that his teachings not only stand the test of time, they are becoming critical for the times our world is facing. #HappyGurpurab
