I’ve been going to the same 24-hour laundromat at 2am for months because i work weird hours. there’s this older black dude who’s always there folding his clothes like it’s a zen ritual. last night my dryer ate a sock and i was cursing under my breath. he walked over, pulled out a single sock from his own basket and said “here, i keep extras just in case somebody needs one. life already takes enough from us.” we ended up sitting on the folding table talking about his late wife and my terrible dating life until 4am. left with clean clothes and somehow a lighter heart.
