Thank you to every one of you who has listened to my music this year. I used to play piano for hours in my living room growing up and dream I was at a theatre filled with people. I was homeschooled and had a really hard time making friends as a kid ‘cuz I was a shy little weirdo, so I put all those feelings into learning music. I thought if I worked hard enough, one day people would care. So thank you from me and from the shy little weirdo sitting at the piano who would’ve cried knowing that people would one day care about what he was making. I don’t ever take you for granted. Here’s the original demo for “Idaho Alien” I recorded at my house. Raw, but world was there out of the gate. I wrote all the piano while listening to this drum machine loop I made on an old sampler. Had this weird swing to it I really loved. All the electronics formed a wrinkled mechanical bed for the song. I’d just discovered how musical baby monitors could be… I recorded a lot of sounds through those and mangled the static on the computer. All of that against the piano made it feel like a kind of narcotized saloon ballad. Lyrically, it was the first time I realized I could just write a story and place myself in it. Seems obvious, but goddamn, that thought completely rewired my songwriting. The spirit of this song deeply transformed me… in a lot of ways it saved my life. Music helps me hear the voice of God, and in this one, I could hear that voice clearer than ever before. “Blood filled up the clawfoot bath, and I will fear no frontier.” This is it in its earliest form. Have always loved this album .. now my son is learning guitar to it ... so great. It's nowhere near my favourite Beatles or any album of anybody but it's great.

@misterminsoo Maybe it's different for music you've never heard vs music that you know and love already ? I could land a burning plane while listening to most George Winston albums for instance.

i cannot relate at all to people who listen to music while writing or studying or reading something at length. y’all can comfortably listen to ambient music in the background while doing other work? how are y’all not completely swept up by the music?

Gerycz Powers Rolin - Activator I'm listening to the first album to go on my 2024 list and I feel utterly steamrolled. monumental sound here, overwhelming in the best way. title track feels properly volcanic, constantly refracting and bubbling outward 🌋

Two minor happenings… 1) I just sold the last copy in existence of ‘Whirlpool’ LP, 10 years after it came out. 2) I’m heading out on tour to EU/UK supporting @trevorpowersss in two days,10 years after we last toured together.

@NicklasSrense12 Yeah its intersting because you're doing the couch thing to block out distraction from the music... my walk is the same for me as its the same every time ... just very lucky how beautiful it is ... and i'm amazed every time ... just Stars Of The Lid, Roedelisu, Eno, Tim Story etc

One of the best things I've done for myself in the last couple of weeks is going back to my teenage habit of spending an hour everyday on the couch with my eyes closed doing nothing but listening to music. An album or two with full awareness on the listening experience.
