One of my pet peeves is seeing labeled events on time series with the implication of causality. e.g. this graph absolutely does not show flipit.wiki is responsible for affecting the Senate races (but onecan dream 😏) Waddabout those confounding factors? #FlipTheSenate

flipit.wiki I made a quick website that keeps track of the closest Senate races (as per @FiveThirtyEight's forecast) and the corresponding @actblue donation links for Democratic candidates. Help direct money to the candidates that need it the most.

Every quarter, the U.S. House of Reps publishes a thousand page report of expenses, from printers to salaries to office snacks 🧾🧾🧾 Can we can make sense of it all, and, more importantly, can the Government?🧐 Check out my @Tamr_Inc blog > tamr.com/blog/where-pub…

This blog post did a great job at laying out something I’ve been noticing for a while. “Hustle culture” has a lot of negative side effects, and one is not being realistic about the biological realities of health. blog.dropbox.com/topics/work-cu…

@jeanqasaur The unfortunate reality is, that as humans, way more than we want to admit of our hiring decisions are based on harmful biases we’ve internalized. I think that there are far worse factors people use like, how is someone dressed, do they speak like I do, etc.

Both as a tenure-track faculty member and as a founder, I've building teams that will need to work closely together through ups and downs. Interpersonal dynamics are very important, which means culture is important. How much homogeneity is necessary and how much is too much?

Been thinking about the recent article by the editor who only hires people who write thank-you notes post-interview--and the backlash about how thank-you notes have much more to do with cultural factors than merit. Where's the line between culture-building and discrimination?

@jim_savage_ Unfortunately what teams need and what they think they need is often very different. The confounding of engineering/coding skills with scientific/inquiry skills is huge right now. Partially driven by a dearth of scientists proactively entering.

This article says that the "lone genius" narrative is bad because it discredits all the people who help. It's also harmful because it leads people to think they have to do things alone! A strong support network is often what makes the difference between good and great.
