I joined a random walking tour and got paired with this super quiet Japanese girl who barely spoke.
We were at Osaka Castle when she suddenly opened up.
Her: I like talking to foreigners, Japanese people… too much pressure.
Me: Yeah, I noticed everyone is super polite but stressed.
We keep walking, talking about normal stuff, Then out of nowhere:
Her: Can I ask you something personal?
Me: Sure.
Her: Do you think it’s weird if I quit my good job to become professional cosplayer? My parents will die.
Before I can answer, she pulls out her phone and shows me her secret Instagram — full cosplay of every anime character imaginable. She’s insanely good.
Me: This is amazing! You should go for it.
Her: dead serious “Okay, Then today is the day, I will tell them now.”
She video calls her parents right there in the middle of the castle grounds while I’m awkwardly standing beside her. The mom starts yelling in Japanese, dad looks heartbroken… then suddenly both of them start laughing.
Mom (in English for my benefit): “Finally! We knew since you were 12. Just don’t cosplay your father again, he still has trauma.”
I was standing there like what the hell just happened. She hugged me after and said I was her lucky charm.
Osaka really is the chaos capital of Japan.

My granddad is the best person i know
At 11, he tried a cig and didn't like it and never smoked since
At 18, he was on the verge of death from sepsis when his mom's friend's husband, a long haul Aeroflot pilot, brought penicillin back from the US. When the antibiotics started working, the doc told his mom - don't cry, he might even live up to 40
At 21, he got a degree in nuclear physics, but wasn't allowed to work in the industry due to weakened health. He found himself in the Soviet space programme
At 26, he sent Sputnik to space, a few weeks before he had his first child
At 32, he made the discovery of the Earth's plasmasphere
At 60, he learnt English because the iron curtain had fallen and he could travel to the international space conferences. He needed to write and present in English
At 70, he would fight me for the dial-up internet as I wanted to chat to online friends, while he needed to send some work emails from home
At 85, he visited me in London and went to the British Museum five days in a row. One of the days we were having afternoon tea, and he exclaimed: "I'm so lucky! Had I not lived to this age, I would not have seen Amenkhotep III statue and had these wonderful scones at the Ritz"
At 90, he was the only person in my family who said I must absolutely take the opportunity to work in crypto
At 94, he still was still co-authoring scientific papers. And this hasn't stopped yet
Yesterday, he turned 95
Happy birthday granddad 😊

A mother-in-law wanted to test which of her three sons-in-law was the nicest.
She pretended to fall into a river while walking with the first son-in-law.
He quickly jumped in and saved her.
The next morning, he found a Chevrolet Malibu with a note, From your mother-in-law.
The second son-in-law did the same thing and received a Ford Fusion the next day.
Then came the third son-in-law's turn.
When the mother-in-law jumped into the river again, he just watched... and walked away.
The next morning, he found a brand-new Cadillac Escalade with a note, From your father-in-law!
