These 10 PromQL queries help you understand what’s really happening: 1. up{job='node'} Check if targets are up. 1 = healthy, 0 = down. 2. rate(http_requests_total[5m]) Per-second request rate over 5 minutes. 3. sum(rate(http_requests_total[5m])) by (service) Request rate grouped by service. 4. histogram_quantile(0.99, rate(http_duration_seconds_bucket[5m])) 99th percentile latency. Measure tail performance. 5. 100 - (avg(rate(node_cpu_seconds_total{mode='idle'}[5m])) * 100) CPU usage percentage. 6. node_memory_MemAvailable_bytes / node_memory_MemTotal_bytes * 100 Available memory percentage. 7. increase(errors_total[1h]) Error increase over the last hour. 8. topk(5, sum(rate(requests_total[5m])) by (endpoint)) Top 5 endpoints by traffic. 9. absent(up{job='critical-service'}) Alert if a metric disappears completely. 10. delta(container_memory_usage_bytes[10m]) Memory usage change over the last 10 minutes. Monitoring isn’t about dashboards. It’s about asking the right questions. Save this before your next production incident
