Pete Buttigieg is obviously very talented. He wouldn’t probably ever be my first choice in a presidential primary, but he’s clearly a special communicator. I went down a rabbit hole on his polling and commentary on why he wouldn’t ever be elected president. A lot of the commentary refers to his being gay. That same commentary ties that to the desire for many to have a masculine president and that he can’t be masculine because he’s gay. Obviously one’s definition of masculinity is somewhat subjective but he seems plenty masculine to me. He served in the military (though that’s not reserved just for men, of course), he’s a father, he’s led a huge department (though again that’s not just reserved for men, obviously, but many definitions of “masculinity” include leadership). It’s ultimately up to him to get to the root of what would hold him back in a presidential primary and proceed accordingly, but this gay men can’t be masculine stuff is dumb.
