Join the New York City Central Labor Council, AFL-CIO, the New York Immigration Coalition and union and community members from across the city as we come together to commemorate International Workers’ Day. May Day is a powerful reminder of the courage and sacrifice of workers throughout history who fought for safety, dignity and justice on the job. Today, we carry that legacy forward. We stand united in our commitment to building a better future for ALL workers. Our solidarity is our strength. Together, we are part of a global movement standing up to the forces that seek to undermine workers’ rights and freedoms.

Meet one of your fellow UFT members, Matthew Colacurto! As a teacher at a Pathways to Graduation program in Manhattan, Colacurto helps to prepare noncompulsory students ages 17 to 21 for the high school equivalency exam. Pathways to Graduation is part of District 79, with about 80 locations throughout the city. Reminder: as educators our pensions are protected. The only people who can actually make decisions about our pensions are the elected TRS trustees. For over 100 years the TRS has made choices on how to maintain our pension system with one guiding principle: keep our pensions strong. That commitment continues. Don't let anyone mislead you. Our pension is guaranteed by the New York State constitution.

President Mulgrew advocated for our paraprofessional RESPECT bill at this morning’s annual City Council breakfast. Each year we present our city budget priorities directly to council members at UFT Headquarters. City Council Speaker Julie Menin echoed her support for the RESPECT check during her address. On Saturday, UFT hosted a Pension Expo at UFT Headquarters. 💲TRS Chair Tom Brown and trustees Victoria Lee and Christina McGrath spoke to members about preparing for retirement at any stage in your career and shared what the TRS does to protect our pensions. Economist Teresa Ghilarducci gave a keynote speech about the importance of retirement security and expanding pensions, saying "We see the value in dignified old age."👏 Thanks to all who joined us to take control of their financial future with the TRS board!

We now have a calendar for next school year! Finalizing this calendar presented some challenges, especially since the school year for UFT members doesn't begin until Tuesday, September 8. The calendar features the legal minimum of 180 combined instructional and PD days. This year, Election Day will be remote instruction. We’ll also have an 11-day spring break like this year. UPDATE! If you're applying for a summer school position, make sure to submit by next THURSDAY, April 30. Applications received May 1 and later will be considered late. Job postings are now open for the @NYCSchools Summer Rising 2026 program. Educators will receive mandated pre-service training on June 29 and 30. Instruction for K–8 students, which is Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., begins on July 1. Summer school for HS students begins on July 9. Learn more and apply: bit.ly/4mD1e33
