President Donald Trump has accused Iran of violating a two-day-old ceasefire by obstructing the Strait of Hormuz.
On Truth Social, Trump criticized Iran’s "dishonorable" conduct, claiming they are illegally charging tankers between $1 million and $2 million to pass through the waterway.
The impact has been immediate: only eight ships crossed the strait on Thursday, a massive decline from the pre-war daily average of 135.
Trump noted that the two-week, Pakistan-brokered truce depends entirely on the "complete, immediate, and safe opening" of the strait. He warned that if this "Tehran tollbooth" remains, the U.S. will resume military strikes on Iranian oil wells and power plants.
If developments continue in this direction, it is likely that the negotiated ceasefire will not hold. It is also likely that more countries will be involved in the conflict.
