I got myself and the rest of my family to learn about BTS as a surprise birthday present for my sister, and I look back on that time with so much fondness. She loved them since early 2015, but I was living out of town and didn’t get to be there. So she watched all the 144p streams on her phone early in the morning, celebrated their wins and comebacks alone and went on with her days, went to concerts, learned the dances, etc. And I knew BTS through her. Like she showed me Dope when it came out because I love choreo and they were damn good, I saved songs she sent me (I was obsessed with Save Me), I called her a #BangtanGirl on one of my Snapchat stories haha. But I didn’t truly know who the boys were, what their real names were, all that. All I knew was that she lived and breathed BTS, and that she didn’t have many people to talk to about them. So a few years later when she left on a trip (to go to the first BTS exhibition in LA haha) I went back home and got a lot of my family together because I had a plan: we were gonna learn who BTS was and surprise her with our knowledge when she got back. We watched the Get to Know BTS videos, we watched the music videos. Then I recorded us guessing who was who in DNA and Idol (we failed, hilariously) and then I put it all in a video together to surprise her. I also added moments that I recorded of her, like when she was surprised with BTS tickets one Christmas, and when she would randomly break into Fire choreo or I Need U. I say all this to say: through learning about them, we all ended up falling in love with them anyways, beyond the assignment of pure birthday present. Years later, we all love bangtan and she has all these people to talk about them with🥹 After knowing the guys, I just think.. How perfect was this entry into the fandom. We gave her a present, sure, but she gave us BTS, in a way. And that’s all love. Both ways.
