I almost burned out 3 months ago. I was an inch away from deleting this account and losing my job For a year I was in service to others, and never in service to myself You might be making the same mistakes I was making Please learn from how I almost screwed it all up Likes, retweets, engagement, positive comments, and number go up were the only ways I judged my success It also didn’t help that I was working 18 hour days, neglecting sleep, my health, and my spirituality O and then I was hacked for most of my net worth Like many of you, I was working a job to pay the bills but also maintain a social media presence with the hopes of one day working for myself I was working myself to the bone at the day job, then spending the rest of my night scrolling social media, overloading my brain with dopamine hits. I was waking up at 2am and checking market prices. I was taking a look at my portfolio knowing nothing changed. I'd flip over at 3am and see what that last tweet was up to. Did I break 1000 likes? Any interesting mentions in my notifications? I deprioritized sleep. I deprioritized eating 3 healthy meals a day. Totally neglected going to the gym I was down 20 pounds and regularly getting told I looked ill. I was shockingly imbalanced. I strongly believe a ton of work and sacrifice are required in order to be successful. The thing is, you can't sacrifice your health in the name of success. I was sacrificing my health. I might have been at all time highs for followers and subscribers to my newsletter. I might have been making more money between my 2 jobs than I could have imagined, but I was doing it at the cost of my livelihood. Exhausted and unhealthy, I was on the verge of losing it all. My boss wasn't happy with me and my content was suffering. I had to make a change. 2 weeks after getting hacked, and probably 1 day before being so burnt out I quit my job and social media, I prioritized myself. For all of February I put social media on autopilot. I scheduled a bunch of my old tweets and worked on my mental and physical health. I was in service to myself rather than others. I let nothing get in the way of: • 8 hours of sleep • 3 healthy homemade meals • An hour of gym time • 30 minutes of writing (my favorite hobby) A total life reset. Down to the bare minimum requirements to be happy and healthy. I came out of February with new clarity on what I wanted in life. I was done doing things that ate my energy. I was done performing day to day activities that drained my soul. I put in my notice at work and doubled down on what brought me satisfaction. I ruthlessly prioritized what filled my cup, rather than emptied it. April was the first full month sticking to these routines. I can honestly say I'm the happiest I've ever been. Reprioritizing my life and being in service to myself was like a system reboot. • Curbing dopamine hits • Not measuring myself on likes and retweets • Fighting for balance • Working towards intense discipline All took me out of the deepest mental, spiritual, and physical hole of my life. We live in a culture that pushes hustling. Pushes intense work. I absolutely believe both of these things are 100% necessary for success. But I also believe equally important is balance. For some people 18 hours of work a day is balanced. And that's fair. For me 18 hours of work + shitty food + no exercise was a recipe for burn out. And I almost hit it. I was an inch away from losing it all. I'm not a fan of "awareness months". I think we should be aware of what's important throughout the year. But in the spirit of mental health awareness month, take some time this week to reexamine your life. Reflect on your habits and routines. Are you actually balanced? Do you prioritize yourself? If not, do a system reboot. Do what I did. I took a notebook and wrote down my non negotiable routines I needed to be healthy, then I built my day around that. 8 hours of sleep, gym, healthy meals will never budge no matter what. They are now prioritized over my business. It will be a lot easier achieving success with a healthy routine and less work rather than an unhealthy routine and more work. There's no success without balance. Never be ashamed to put yourself first.
