This is shocking. From an underlying perspective, Vegas has been one of the best teams since the Olympic break. Their PDO is in the tank. This screams of panic over process within the organization.

Do you launch your parachute while you're still sitting in the plane? Cassidy is the one who knows this team and has gotten them into the playoff spot, despite ALL their major flaws. Now, when the team loses in the first (maybe second) round - matchup dependent, McCrimmon has to keep Torts going into next season OR admit that he made a mistake in turning to Torts and not bring him back. If he still has the "fire Bruce card" in his pocket, then it takes some heat off him from needing to have a PERFECT offseason. Now, with Bruce gone - he still needs to have the perfect offseason, but all the focus will be on the roster because it wasn't good enough under Bruce (who did win them a championship) or Torts... or DeBoer, or Gallant - when a GM goes through four coaches, eyes turn to him likely being the problem. It's a mistake for McCrimmon to do this now - for self-preservation reasons AND because Butch wasn't the problem. He's not the one out there allowing goals.

@woolkins @Acceptable_Owl Yes - the problems that ailed you coming into the season weren't solved so fire the scapegoat early because that will fix all the problems. Yes, they'll get the typical new coach bump. But their defense and goaltending will still suffocate them in the playoffs - if not sooner.
