This man, whose boss spent the last three months handing Vladimir Putin everything on a silver platter short of a gift-wrapped annexation of Kyiv, is now lecturing the rest of the alliance about loyalty. Let that sink in for a moment. The United States, under Donald Trump, has done the following: blocked Ukrainian aid, cosied up to Moscow at every available opportunity, threatened to abandon Article 5 commitments, and sent a former Fox News presenter to run the most powerful military on earth. And now the Secretary of Defense is pointing his finger at Germany and France and asking why they seem a bit nervous about the arrangement. This is like burning someone’s house down and then yelling at them for not having home insurance. The NATO “crisis” Hegseth is describing does not exist in any meaningful sense outside the one that Washington manufactured itself. Europe did not drift away from America. America drove away from Europe at speed, in reverse, while making rude gestures out the window. The allies who are now hedging, rearming independently, and quietly exploring what a post-American security architecture might look like are not being disloyal. They are being rational. There is a difference, though it appears to be lost on the current administration. What we are watching in real time is a protection racket masquerading as an alliance review. You do not get to spend three years undermining collective defence, validating every Russian talking point, and treating NATO summits like a shakedown operation, and then act wounded when your partners start making alternative arrangements. Trump never forgets. That much is true. He also never forgives. And he never, under any circumstances, looks in a mirror. The crisis is real. The cause is standing at the podium.
