@memeslich Ahh, right. For 2E it was the Tome of Magic and it had Squaring the Circle, for exactly this application.

@memeslich Some expansion for 1E or 2E had a set of metamagic spells that would do things like change the shape of an area of effect, and 3.5E has a similar Sculpt Spell feat that has four 10-foot cubes as one of its options.
