$TAO is down ~20% today Sam Dare, @covenant_ai founder dumped 37,000 $TAO worth ~$10M after announcing Covenant is leaving the Bittensor ecosystem. Covenant owns subnets @tplr_ai @basilic_ai & @grail_ai Here is what is actually going on: 1️⃣ Sam claims Jacob (Bittensor founder) suspended their subnet emissions. Jacob stated he does not have access to do that. What Jacob did say: he sold his personal alpha holdings on the 3 subnets, less than 1% of what he had invested into his teams. His reasoning was that the subnets weren’t running & were nearly 100% burning, meaning alpha stakers were getting little to no rewards. Under dTAO, when alpha tokens are sold, subnet demand drops & emissions follow. It’s the same system that all ~128 subnets are subject to. The rewards Jacob sold were relatively small, especially compared to the 37K TAO Sam just dumped. 2️⃣ Sam says Covenant’s channels were deprecated & moderation rights removed Jacob says Sam deprecated his own channels with a pinned comment (in Discord) & an X post to prove it. Jacob did acknowledge removing Sam’s ability to delete comments in Discord temporarily because he was deleting honest criticism. But he says he never removed his moderator role. I went through the Discord & X myself. Most people who were actually present & invested backed up Jacob’s account. The “you rugged us comments” are directed at Sam not Jacob. What I find interesting: my friend @TaoOutsider interviewed Sam just one week ago & he seemed genuinely happy & eager in the TAO ecosystem. And now he’s pulling the rug out from under subnet investors. The timing is hard to ignore. Their subnets, particularly Templar, had serious potential. A lot bet on their future & just watched their investments plummet. I’m pro-TAO on this but let’s look at honest criticisms: 1️⃣ Governance feels more centralized than decentralized (does cont/the foundation have too much control?) 2️⃣ dTAO mechanics create volatility (selling of tokens impact emissions) 3️⃣ Subnet dependency (dominating subnets that leave, do they impact the ecosystem too much?) 4️⃣ Maturity vs perception (is it still early?) All of these are opportunities in a still evolving ecosystem. This is the first & one-of-a-kind solution so there is no perfection. It’s not easy to be the first to create a path for an open intelligence network. There are growing pains that are being worked out as Covenant is not the first exit & it won’t be the last. But this does present a good opportunity to look at what is working & what can still be improved. And here is the proof that it’s already being considered: Jacob just outlined lock-based subnet ownership. Ownership that’s determined by a team's long term economic commitment. Investors can see in advance if an owner unlocked their tokens, reprice before they exit & move their conviction to another team. This would be a governance upgrade which is another step towards achieving decentralization. I think Bittensor has been making improvements over time & I think that they will emerge stronger.
