I feel like the debate around Yu-Gi-Oh and returning players always devolves into people talking past each other. Yes, every game evolves over time, and yes, not every game needs to be "for everyone". But it's a fact that Yu-Gi-Oh is UNIQUELY difficult for players to return to. People bounce off of it at much higher rates than TCGs like pokemon, MTG, hearthstone, etc. Let me give y'all an analogy. Say a boy grew up eating at a restaurant every weekend. He had birthday parties there, celebrated big life milestones there, etc. It served burgers and pizza, like plenty of other restaurants, but for whatever reason, this restaurant was his favorite. Maybe the restaurant had an ancient egyptian theme for its mascot and decor that he really vibed with. Boy moves away, goes off to school, stops eating at the restaurant for twenty years. One day, he's visiting his home town and decides he wants to grab a bite to eat at his old favorite restaurant. He assumes there will be differences. Maybe some of the old menu items are replaced with more modern stuff. Maybe they've started incorporating newer cooking techniques and flavors. Maybe they've switched up their branding a bit. There's probably no more purple ketchup or five dollar sandwich deals, those were just fads and he's accepted he'll probably never see them again. But instead, when he walks in and looks at the menu, he's horrified. Spicy. Every. Single. Item. The restaurant still sells burgers and pizza, but there's no way to order food and not have it come at minimum ghost pepper-level hot. Most of the food is far spicier than that, even. He gives it a shot, but it's just too hot for him. And what's worse is that when he asks the staff why everything is flaming hot, the other restaurant patrons start to mock him, telling him that if he can't handle the heat, then he's just a boomer and that the food isn't for him. So now he has a choice to make: 1: he can try and eat spicy food more often and build up a tolerance to it, in the hope that maybe once he can handle the heat, he'll be able to find some enjoyment in the thing he used to love. 2: he can just leave and never go there again. >99% of people are just gonna leave. They may always wonder why the restaurant went down that path. Other restaurants dabble in spice every so often, and as a whole, the fast food industry is definitely more spice-friendly than it was twenty years ago, but clearly this one particular restaurant just went all-in on spice and never looked back.
