Vrije doorvaart door de Straat van Hormuz kan en mag op geen enkele manier belemmerd worden. De impact van de huidige situatie wordt wereldwijd gevoeld, ook bij ons in Nederland. Vanmiddag sprak ik met leiders van 50 landen in een videoconferentie om te bespreken hoe we gezamenlijk kunnen bijdragen aan een oplossing.
Dit begint met druk op Iran om het principe van vrije doorvaart te respecteren. Daarnaast behoort een militaire missie om de Straat van Hormuz te beveiligen zodra de vijandelijkheden zijn beëindigd tot de mogelijkheden. Nederland onderzoekt dat en we werken met bondgenoten aan de militaire planning daarvoor.
Ook na het aangekondigde staakt-het-vuren zijn er nog veel onzekerheden en de ontwikkelingen volgen zich in hoog tempo op. Daarom werken we verschillende scenario’s uit. Eén ding is duidelijk: scheepvaart moet altijd en onbelemmerd door de Straat van Hormuz kunnen.
