Perfect, beautiful little Christian self admitted to the hospital this week. He is the absolute poster child for the message, "You can't judge health by appearances." Despite looking so healthy, and his poo appearing perfectly 'normal', it is in fact teeming with adult roundworm which, as you can see, are full of even more roundworm eggs. As is often the case, his first poo sample was clear. But parasites and their eggs aren't shed with every poo so it's neccessary to take a few samples. Christian first arrived here last Easter, seriously ill. I treated him successfully and he was released in May 2025. I haven't seen him since. Wherever he's been he was obviously doing well for himself, as he weighs well over a kilo. But sadly he's recently picked up roundworm and lungworm from contaminated food or water somewhere. And it moves me to tears that this darling boy knew to come back here to be treated. These endearing, clever little animals are so very special. Christian's history:x.com/HedgehogCabin/…

My lovely neighbour alerted me to two precious 🦔🦔sleeping together in one of her🦔houses 🤭.Thankfully she knows the signs of a sick🦔. Meet Jay Z who obviously has a soft spot for Beyoncé🥰. They’re great weights, but sadly both full of lungworm. Their treatment is underway ❤️

@Lilith_Atheist Sounds like she should maybe look at getting a front end alignment and wheels balanced.

@GuelphToday It's not new technology but why is it needed to begin with over practical and affordable?

The bovver boys are back!🥰 Darling Theo, a frequent flyer here; often returning home to get mended, arrived last night. Seen here first, distinctive by the slight limp left from one of his injuries (see below for his history). Followed just 2 minutes later by sweet Arthur, hot on Theo's scent trail. Hedgehogs are not territorial and not naturally aggressive, but they are solitary, so the presence of another hedgehog upsets them (which is why you'll see fear-poo in your feeder, if one hog eating senses the presence of another). Our provisions for them bring them into proximity with each other, unnaturally, therefore unnatual behaviour will occur. These gentle and docile little animals can sometimes be seen pushing and shoving each other, occasionally actually biting and shaking. This is stress behaviour, not aggression or territorial fighting. It's upsetting to see, but please do break up any such 'fights' by gently lifting one hog and placing him in another feeder, or at the opposite end of the garden. Having more than one feeder can help these precious vistors behave more naturally. But not all the time.😊 There are 7 open pens in the lodge, each equipped with 2 beds. There are 6 more houses just feet away, around the hospital building. And there are a further 8 houses around the garden. But everyone loves pen 5. I have no idea why, as it's identical to 4 other pens, but there can be no better illustration of how we, with all our knowledge, logic and wisdom, really know absolutely nothing about the desires of hedgehogs. Needless to say Theo and Arthur butted heads for a while, each trying to get the other to leave pen 5. They both left in the end, but I expect they'll be back tonight for round 2.🥰 Theo's story: x.com/HedgehogCabin/… Authur's story: x.com/HedgehogCabin/…

Just look at how this clever boy solves the problem of the feeder being bricked up. How can you not love them?🥰 Hedgehogs have survived, unchanged, for 15 million years. 15 million years! Just think - our humble little garden visitors once walked with woolly mammoths and sabre-toothed tigers. They survived so well because they are intelligent, adaptable, courageous and problem-solving. The fact they are on the brink of extinction now, despite surviving persecution, drought, famine, and the great ice age, is a serious indicator of how deeply in trouble our fragile ecosystem is. Please do what you can to help these gentle, clever little animals, and our beautiful vulnerable world: Leave out a dish of clean ice-free water each evening, by your back and front door (just as many animals die of dehydration in the winter as they do in the summer). Leave the edges of your garden and at least one corner uncut and undisturbed, to allow natural food to live and grow. Leave the leaves as they fall each year (that blanket of leaves protects next year's insects all through the winter. They'll pollinate our food and feed our hedgehogs, if allowed to sleep and grow under that priceless blanket). And please don't be tempted to 'tidy up' all the dead plant stalks - our precious pollinators will be overwintering inside those hollow stems. A dish of dry kitten food placed inside a feeder (see hedgehogcabin.info/making-a-feeder for how to make one) would be a life saver for all the hedgehogs who are arising from hibernation right now.

@JacobAShell Recently bought a couple books from Amazon (supporting a friends daughter) and the print was so light in the books they were difficult to read.

These days I buy a book on Amazon and within hours it gets printed and bound in some facility, and a day later it arrives at my doorstep...but the quality of the book (pictures, type) is low to the point of defeating the purpose of there being a physical book.

@manda_kenwrick @easyuk Wow! That’s just amazing, I had no idea. Thank you, and thank you to everyone who participates in this scheme. ❤️This money makes so much difference and helps to keep the hospital open. It always seems to arrive at the right time, just when a big heating bill has arrived. 🥰

Always wonder WTF @FedEx is up to when their truck comes into the building parking lot, pauses just for a few seconds so their GPS can track it was here, then drives away without delivering any packages.

It's official! The hedgehogs are starting to rise from hibernation. They will be weak, hungry and thirsty, and a little slow and disorientated at first. But these vulnerable little animals will use the last of their remaining energy getting back to the one place they trust will have good safe food and clean water waiting for them - you!🥰 So please have your dry kitten/cat food out ready, and plenty of fresh water each evening. It won't be long now, and it's far too early for there to be any natural food around, so your provisions will literally be a life saver. This is an ex-patient returning here yesterday, just after rising from his hibernation nest in the woods. I know he's an ex-patient because he heads straight for pen 5, the favourite pen for all the hedgehogs (I have no idea why, and there are 6 identical pens!). I know he's fresh from hibernation because although he knows the way well, he's slow, hesitant, stopping to smell his way. And I know he's a boy, because boys rise from hibernation first, about a month before the girls. They need this time to eat without distraction, in order to recover from hibernation and build themselves back up to a strong healthy state, ready for the trials of mating. Don't worry if yours aren't up yet. The later they went down, the later they will rise.

Hedgehogs are either rising early from hibernation, or some haven’t hibernated at all. This footage is from 1 of my garden feeders early this morning. There is no natural food around, please help if you can, providing food/water will help to save so many precious lives #hedgehog
