We were told that Neil Lennon was hated due to sectarianism, that simply wasn’t true, the reason was because he was a bitter wee fuckin animal. Fast forward 10 years & he’s stopped his bitterness & he’s actually a decent pundit, it was never about sectarianism. Try it mate!
Graham Spiers@GrahamSpiers

Something intriguing has happened in the dynamic between Neil Lennon and Rangers fans. They used to detest him, I think it’s fair to say, but I’m struck by the number of RFC fans commending him here in these quotes/responses. It’s impressive, but what happened?

These statistics demonstrate a stark contradiction of the "downtrodden Catholic" propaganda. Time for Catholics to fully support their country. Northern Ireland, unlike the Republic of Ireland with its Irish born Protestant population reduced to 1.4% from 10%, has demonstrated, since inception, its systemic equality in all matters; freedom of speech, voting, housing, education, law, employment, NHS and of course UK state benefits.
Belfast News Letter@News_Letter

Northern Ireland's Protestant population down 14% over 100 years as number of Catholics doubles, study comparing census of 1926 to today shows trib.al/3pMEhRN

@Thamesville @LewisJonathanE It doesn't change the fact that minorities living in Ireland were protected in the constitution. Restriction policies on immigration is a separate issue. Can't say I agree with the sentiment.

@AdamMartinL @LewisJonathanE Read some of the many books on the topic- Here’s a good place to start. Chapter 4 is delightfully detailed, factual, informative and engaging. My condolences.

Irish nationalists, I've learned, really don't like people knowing about — let alone discussing this history The fact remains: the Irish Free State was an ethnostate, meant as a homeland for Irish Catholics and didn't put the protection of minorities at the top of its agenda In that sense, the Free State was extremely similar to most nation-states that emerged in the wake of the Austro-Hungarian, Ottoman, and Russian Empires Irish nationalism is nationalism

2/2 Rural Protestants were targeted during the Anglo-Irish and civil wars. Those who held lands that were not surrounded by a wall had their land confiscated. It was only in Dublin and other cities that Protestants were safe. My dad's family moved from Clare to Limerick city.

@AdamMartinL @PaulGolding @Joshctid95 @BFirstParty There are many such takes on the theme, the horse stable line .. Basically he was born and lived in an Ireland that was under British rule. He was a staunch Unionist & citizen of the British Isles.. a Protestant and a man who attributed his life to every aspect of British life.

@AinsleyGovan @Pat1975Watty Why do people keep repeating this? He never said that about himself. Daniel O'Connell said it. He wasn't 100% English, his mother had Gaelic Norman roots.

@Pat1975Watty He was Anglo-Protestant Ascendancy ... born to the elite English-descended class that ruled Ireland for Britain. He spent his life as a British general and PM, and famously said “Just because I was born in a stable doesn’t make me a horse ...” in relation to being called Irish.

@sylvesterhakin Ethnic cleansing is a wild conclusion. To start, the first 10 years were under British rule. Many just moved up north. It should also be noted that this trend actually began in the mid 1880's, long before Irish independence.

@Aldamir @gerry_sull25275 Unionists always try to justify the murder of Catholics. Look at the gloating over the Soldier F verdict or the lack accountability for KAT signs. The Scots are the same, always othering the Taigs but somehow the likes of Ger Butler, Billy Conolly, Arthur Conan Doyle are exempt.

@gerry_sull25275 I don’t see anyone here trying to justify what happened to his great uncle or to Paddy Kietly’s father. “Your lot” really say it all. Your entire viewpoint is just based in sectarian bitterness.
