Thank you to the thousands of CalR users for all the positive feedback. We are happy that your in vivo energy balance analyses just got faster and easier. We secretly made this tool to solve our own problems. Looks like it helped others too.

@Maratosflier @EricTopol @Nature They do measure metabolic rate and report binned and adjusted energy expenditure in Extended Data Fig. 2. It's hard to tell if torpor is happening, and they don't mention it. In all fairness, they present a ton of data in a strict word limit.

@EricTopol @Nature Whike a comprehensive mouse study be nevertheless about genetically diverse mice not humans. Findings confirm & somewhat extend what's known about inbred mice. Point to note: 2 days consecutive fasting usually leads to mouse torpor. @Bankslab Was this evaluated?

New @Nature The largest study of impact of dietary restriction (DR) in ~1,000 mice with diverse genetic background for health and lifespan nature.com/articles/s4158… —40% caloric restriction had the most lifespan expansion effect but suppressed immune response and loss of lean muscle mass —a divergence of health and longevity effects of DR —"genetic background proved to be the more important factor in determining lifespan."

This is Canadian chic. Too cool for me. But Lawrence also knows how to rock the whole-body tyvek suit and hair bonnet--Boston style.

How ridiculous that legacy metabolic phenotyping companies still normalize EE data by body mass! This approach has been discredited for many years & has polluted the biomedical literature for decades. Normalizing EE by body mass raised to the 0.75 power is even more absurd; an abuse of Kleiber's INTERspecific (NOT intraspecific) mass scaling exponent. For more details, see my definitive textbook on metabolic measurement, "Measuring metabolic rates: a manual for scientists", published by Oxford University Press. The best state of the art analytical routines for extracted data can be found in @Bankslab's CalR.app.

Tuna has an incredible capacity for mitochondrial OXPHOS in muscle. How do we study it? This is our way -- thanks to Luke Mead and Ray. Just to add, the samples are incredibly tasty.

His humor, scientific insights, and mentorship will be sorely missed. His support altered the trajectory of my career and that of many others. He was just so good. My thoughts go out to his family and everyone close to Dave.

Science has lost a giant of physiology and metabolism. Vandy has lost a true leader. I have lost a mentor, colleague, and dear friend. Those of us lucky to have known him will remember his dedication and his (odd) humor. Rest now @DHWasserman1 We will miss you.

Hello friends! Have any of you used CalR for analysis of EE data? I have some CLAMS data I want to run, but I am a bit confused on the first step of setting up the data file to import into CalR. Thank you in advance for any help/insight!
