People say leaving a narcissist is the hardest part. I don’t think it is. I think the hardest part is after, when everything is quiet and you’re left with your own thoughts trying to figure out what actually happened. As a survivor, you go back and forth a lot. Like much of American culture, Evangelicalism, as it developed in the American context, was exported around the world. Growing up in Canada, I listened nightly to Adventures in Odyssey. Focus on the Family parenting manuals were treated like sacred texts. The voices of leaders such as John MacArthur and John Piper shaped what felt like the definitive perspective on theology. Ecclesial movements like Calvary Chapel, Sovereign Grace, Mars Hill, and the American megachurch model became the default template for how we “did church.” This is not unique to Canada. The same strain of Evangelicalism carried its trademarked “gospel” and its formal structures to the rest of the world through sophisticated marketing and an early mastery of emerging online platforms. In short, American Evangelicalism’s political failure has not only damaged a local religious movement, it continues to erode the broader credibility of Christianity itself.

Which family they’d be visiting. Their father turned on me when he got caught lying to someone else, gaslit me and lied about our relationship, villainized me, punished me, swept me and our child under the rug, stonewalled & instantly replaced me, giving every specific promise he ever made to me to a doppelgänger my age, had me gang stalked for years, never acknowledging my loss again, gaslighting me constantly ever since and having the nerve to lie and play the victim when he swore he would always be my friend.
