@mmmmlecker @abookofsymbols when i was living in pasadena i had this weird thing going on where no matter what coffee shop i chose to read in, danny pudi would always be at the next table.

@CapenerSean Sounds like some “last man” thinking. The question is, what will you do if it happens. Does a totally disappear song need a witness? Will u put it out there?

a totally unhinged, self-aggrandizing thing that i nonetheless believe is that i have a 'how to disappear completely'-level song in me and i'm only ever about a month of practice and a little bit of luck away from being able to externalize it

@mekkivelli @drumm_colin if anything i suspect it's the fantasy that one can *not* waste time that animates the 'better to only ever read a few things, as long as it's closely' mindset

One thing we tell students is that they're almost certainly trying to read *too carefully*, or trying to do a second reading on a first reading. You need to get through massive volume and then come back to read carefully later when you know what you're looking for and why

@mekkivelli @drumm_colin (and that's granting that LLMs make good enough summaries of books generally that they're likely to be better than the one a beginner would 'hurt themselves' by doing wrong, which has ... not been my experience)

@mekkivelli @drumm_colin maybe, but still not sure how any of that would be made better by having an llm do the first pass readings, which still seems like outsourcing the step you have to learn first in order to get good at the others

@mekkivelli @drumm_colin right but what you're talking about offloading onto the LLM is precisely the small weight/core muscle group stuff that people hurt themselves by skipping

@drumm_colin what I’m trying to get at: going by that logic, why not let an LLM do the first order reading and sort out all the obvious positions to then delve into when reading carefully?
