Uganda's 1995 Constitution recognises four land tenure systems under Article 237: Customary, Freehold, Mailo, and Leasehold. Ownership under each of these systems contains specific rights and obligations for landowners and occupants.

The 1900 Buganda Agreement significantly altered land ownership in the central region of Uganda. It divided land into two types: Mailo land, given to kings and other notable individuals, and crown land, reserved for government use.
