Mission-focused work and views that few get to experience. Our helitack crews are a critical first response resource. These crews are highly trained wildland firefighters who are transported by helicopter to respond quickly to new fires and support operations on the ground. Helicopters allow crews to access remote areas faster, reduce hiking time, and support suppression efforts through water bucket drops, reconnaissance, and the delivery of additional firefighters, tools, and supplies. Search and rescue volunteers step up when it matters most—often at great personal risk. Today, I announced that our government is supporting their work—investing $2.86M through the Search and Rescue New Initiatives Fund in seven projects across the country that strengthen local capacity. But we’re also launching a new $6M call for proposals so more teams can access the tools and training they need to keep Canadians safe.

These grants help local governments purchase slip-on tanker units that can quickly convert trucks, UTVs, and other vehicles into wildland fire engines when they’re needed most.
