This month, the team behind Polygon Miden released a new version of Miden VM (v0.7). This latest version includes a variety of new features, the sum of which improved VM performance by 30%. Among those new features is a variation of Falcon signature verification, a key building block for Polygon Miden. So what is Falcon? Falcon is a digital signature scheme known primarily for its security features. Unlike traditional signature schemes like RSA and ECC and their derivatives, Falcon is post-quantum secure. Falcon is also more efficient, with smaller key sizes compared to RSA and ECC, making it incredibly practical in a blockchain application where storage and computational resources are limited. Additional efficiencies were added by the team working on Polygon Miden. The Falcon signature used in Miden VM v0.7 is a variation called Falcon512. Falcon512 signatures differ from the standard Falcon signature scheme in that instead of using SHAKE256 hash function in the hash-to-point algorithm, Miden VM uses RPO256. This makes the signature more efficient to verify in Miden VM.
