Term, and more importantly, the institution itself (organization, status, for example), is European, was copied by rest of world centuries later.

Do you finally recognize that university is different institution than madrasa? Every university is educational institution, but not every educational institution is university. Islamic world had zero unis until 19th c.

Both are higher education institutions. Its just the curriculum that has switched.
