@kiityc @DocEmUK As a paediatrician with that hx all i would want is a finger prick BG. If >11 mmol then straight referral to paeds ward and If unwell,vomiting then obs 999 to A&E. We don't need a lab glucose. I've seen kids go into DKA while waiting on lab tests.

@DrEilidhMaria We can amicably disagree on this point. I believe that students impression of not being able to be a Dr is often because of it being built up as this super academic profession. Dispelling this helps widen access into medicine and hopefully a broader range of doctors.

The idea that you need to very academic to be a good doctor is false. The high entry requirements for medicine are there because it is a competitive degree. There are many excellent doctors who came into medicine by alternate routes. Good at passing exams does not = good doctor

@Neal94G Also what makes someone a good doctor in one specialty might not make them good in another specialty. All I am saying is you do not need to be highly academic to be a good doctor.

@Neal94G Being good at exams (science based) means you can remember a lot of facts and vomit it onto an exam paper. Does not make you a good critical thinker. You can be both empathetic and give patient centered evidence based care.

So sorry to hear the sad news of the passing of Malcolm Donaldson. A remarkable person and superb paediatrician. He was an inspiration to many & a loss to @RCPCHScotland. Condolences to his wife Julia.
