Dan agreed to let me interview him back in 2009 when I was a journalism student at Umass. Could not have been more kind, respectful, or gracious about it. He is still without question king of the baseball trolls whom every Red Sox twitter troll aspires to be. The difference between him and your average troll, however, is that Dan's actually a good writer and has the self awareness to know when to turn it off. He also has the single most impressive instinct for when to push a button at just the right pressure level at exactly the right time. Completely understand why he's so despised by so many (especially players, I'd hate his guts if I were a player) but I'll always appreciate Dan for what he is.

I’ll add to the chorus here: when I was a junior in HS I emailed a bunch of Boston sportswriters asking if they had advice for me as I pursued journalism. Shaughnessy was the only one to respond, gave me his office # and we eventually talked for like an hour on the phone.
