@paulwillard81 @TheChrisLambert Yeah, I can see this structure working much better in the book (which I haven't read) since we get access to Grace's internal thoughts.

PHM wanted to start in space rather than spend the first 45 min on Earth. So we get the ridiculous amnesia gimmick that allowed them to break that 45 minutes into 5 minute chunks revealed throughout the film. Interstellar’s gimmick is the “ghost”. It gives the film a mystery MacGuffin that keeps audiences interested throughout the set up and journey to the planets when the movie finally has its pay off scenes. Both try their hardest to emotionally manipulate the audience. PHM is more obvious about it. Interstellar is also obvious about it but has a bit more tact. Both have a lot of filler. The Matt Damon sequence is the best thing between either film. PHM has the stronger cinematography and doesn’t just flash a cool image for 2 seconds then cut away (a big pet peeve of mine with Nolan; he never lingers on a great shot). PHM is cheesier and more by the numbers. But also actually develops its characters and relationships in a way that makes them feel fully three dimensional. Interstellar does not do that. It’s something Nolan struggles with, in general. I find both have kind of weird endings that feel more like shrugs than a meaningful conclusion. Alright. I’ve made my pick. Interstellar wins. As fun as Rocky is and as much as I enjoyed the dynamic between the two, the Matt Damon stuff is just that much more interesting than like 99% of PHM. The build up of Damon’s character, the surprise, the payoff. I don’t think PHM had a moment that came anywhere close to that.

@euphausiaceanne @TierZoo Apparently they do have an almost 4 hour version of it. Was bummed they skipped a lot of the Earth/project story. Stratt’s singing scene felt really misplaced, but if we’d spent more time on the project it would’ve hit harder imo.

@TierZoo They really kinda put the backstory of the Hail Mary project on the back burner so I also was a little bummed about them not nuking Antarctica. I believe this movie needed to be four hours long and I wonder if a snyder cut of it exists

Project Hail Mary review: 1: Best movie I've seen in quite some time 2: I wish I vibed with the Rocky/Grace humor more. I've not read the book since 2021 but from what I remember, I felt like the bulk of the comedic lines were between Grace and Stratt, not Grace and Rocky. Grace and Rocky had a more serious friendship in the book. Movie rocky feels like he is teetering on the edge of Big Bang Theory humor at times. 3: I was bummed we didn't get to watch them nuke antarctica 4: Them leaving out relativistic explanations for Grace not aging and Rocky having extra fuel was frustrating.

@leoclacks Never tried this one specifically but a few different cordura pads and it’s a great material, only downside is it can be a bit rough on the skin. Glass skates get super fast on them too if you wanna zoom.
