@Gambleon100plus @tangotiger Hitters in 1940s were much contact-focused than hitters in 2020s. You don’t see too many big leaguers choking up on the bat with two strikes these days

The Lumiline Chronograph was considered state of the art, used by the military for ballistics. I'll defer to the physicists out there to confirm that it may in fact even be more accurate than radar To the extent this is as "ground truth" as you can get, then 98.6 plate = 107

@JosephMorris21 @tangotiger The did this for a Bob Gibson start I believe and I think conclusion was sitting low 90s Maybee touching 95-96

@tangotiger Can't you just compare the footage to modern pitchers and time how long it takes to reach home plate?

I’m always surprised people don’t talk about Ryan’s K numbers (in terms of K/9) and not counting stats. If he was sitting like 98-103 or god knows what people think and touching 108 his K/9 would have been approaching 20. He was also facing much worse hitters even though people will claim modern hitters suck becuase they hit .240 against 98 mph splitters. In short nobody that touches 108 has a K/9 beteeen 8-10

You realize his famous 108 mph pitch was actually taken with a laser that was so wildly inaccurate it was literally never used again. It was also in the 9th inning of a game where they were running a guess Ryan’s fastest pitch promo. A game where his fastest pitch in previous innings was like 88-93 rage if I recall. So while he obv didn’t throw 108 there’d also probably be 0% chance that famous pitch was 100.9. The fastball movie is worst thing ever for accuracy.

@jacklambert__ You are forgetting to mention the MPH difference from the JUGGS gun to the current Hawkeye technology. Fastball would be about 4mph faster than the JUGGS reported. Nolan Ryan thew 100.9 on the gun in 1972. Equivalent to 104.9 today.

Mason Miller has become more must-watch than any pitcher in baseball, including starters. This is one of the most incredible things I’ve ever witnessed

Couple of exciting “firsts” tonight in the world of Bowman pitchers. 6:30 EST - Nationals 3rd round pick Landon Harmon makes his professional debut. 10:05 EST - Johnny King makes his first High-A start and will be the 2nd youngest pitcher to start the year at that level.

While 60 Ks and 4 hits may seem good, it’s actually way way way better if you count playoffs and WBC. Anyways here are some Miller cards: oranges /25, gold /50 and last picture all 3 RC are # /5

Mason Miller allowed 2 runs in his 2nd appearance as a Padre on 8/5/25. Since that date: 26 appearances 28.1 IP 4 Hits 0 ER 61 K’s (19.4 K/9) 0.49 WHIP This is absolutely all-time stuff

Fuentes' 4-seamer averaged 97.3 mph, touched 99.5 and was clocked at 99 mph or higher three times. His got a whiff with 6 of 9 swings against his slider. He threw his changeup (splitter) just six times during this 72-pitch outing.

Didier Fuentes looked amazing today also, only a matter of time before he gets the Strider treatment and Atl realizes can’t afford to not pitch him
