BOEING TOLD HIM IT WOULD BREAK HIM
John Barnett spent 32 years at @Boeing as a quality control manager. He found metal shavings left near flight control systems on 787 Dreamliners. He found faulty oxygen masks. He found workers pressured to fit defective parts to meet production deadlines. He reported all of it.
Boeing's response was to destroy him.
A senior manager called him 21 times in eight hours.
The message was explicit: "I am going to push you until you break."
Barnett filed whistleblower complaints with the FAA and OSHA. Boeing denied everything and allegedly wrecked his career. He developed PTSD. Nightmares about people dying in planes.
On March 9, 2024, while in Charleston for his own legal deposition against the company, he was found dead in his truck. Gunshot wound to the head. The coroner ruled it suicide.
Senator Blumenthal later told Boeing's former CEO David Calhoun directly: "John broke."
His family filed a wrongful death lawsuit in 2025. It says Boeing may not have pulled the trigger, but what they did to him made the outcome entirely foreseeable. That is the allegation. Boeing disputes it.
The executives are still employed. The lawyer who defended Boeing is still billing by the hour.
This is what happens when you tell the truth about a company that builds the things you trust to keep you in the air.
