Senator Blumenthal later told Boeing's former CEO David Calhoun directly: "John broke." His family filed a wrongful death lawsuit in 2025. It says Boeing may not have pulled the trigger, but what they did to him made the outcome entirely foreseeable. That is the allegation. Boeing disputes it. The executives are still employed. For more than a decade, its innovative growth on every major online platform has extended its reach to countless millions around the world. This spring, at the end of our 58thseason, 60 Minutes grew rapidly with an unheard-of 9% jump in viewers on CBS.   “60” has been the number-one program in America for decades because our beloved audience finds integrity, quality, and humanity in our stories. When stewardship of the program passed to my colleagues and me, our responsibility was to expand energetically into a new age of media technology while preserving the values our audience expects. Now, the new owner of our network is casting this legend aside, apparently to curry a moment of favor with the Trump administration.   The waste is heartbreaking.   Last month, 60 Minutes lost its DNA when our entire senior leadership and two of our best on-air correspondents were cruelly fired without cause. Good people were silenced because they stood up for our audience. They stood for fairness against the forces of political bias; they stood for professionalism against chaos.   For my part, new management has instructed me to inject falsehoods and bias into a politically sensitive story. I’ve been told to include assertions that are unverified. To date, in every case, I have managed to ignore these instructions or refuse them. Recently, politicians have been invited to choose correspondents for interviews on the broadcast. Giving politicians control over 60 Minutes interviews is not how this is done. Finally, incompetence and unprofessionalism in the new management have wreaked havoc. In a case involving one of my stories, the entire program came within 19 minutes of not getting on the air at all.   At 60 Minutes, we have fought harder than anyone knows to save the program that became an American icon. We owed that to our millions of viewers. I am deeply moved by the thousands of wishes we have received to “keep up the good fight.” Most of the men and women of CBS News are still in that fight. But now the collapse of values at the top has become untenable. The leadership of 60 Minutes is no longer recognizable. The principles I hold dear are gone, and so I must leave as well.   I depart after 37 years at CBS with one emotion—a heart brimming with gratitude for the men and women of CBS News who encouraged and enriched my work, very often at the risk of their own lives. BREAKING: HOLY SH*T! Trump's Pentagon hires a convicted Jan. 6th insurrectionist to work in a top position with access to highly classified military information. And it gets so much worse... According to bombshell reporting from The Washington Post, Elias Irizarry has been given a powerful job inside the Defense Department’s Special Operations and Low Intensity Conflict office. Irizarry took part in the deadly Capitol riot when he was 19 years old and rather than reassess his life after he was convicted for his crimes, he chose to double down on MAGA fascism. He ran unsuccessfully for a South Carolina state House seat as a Republican and now he's bringing his noxious politics to the halls of the Pentagon. And Irizarry was not a minor insurrectionist. He was part of the hardcore band of Trumpers who entered into the actual Capitol building through a broken window. He was wielding a metal pole as a weapon, but didn't strike anyone that we know of. When the FBI searched his phone, they discovered “a gap of data between January 1, 2021 and January 8, 2021, which suggests that Irizarry deleted information from his cell phone pertaining to his involvement on January 6, 2021." He was sentenced to two weeks in jail and was eventually pardoned by Trump. The Post reports that DoD staff have "raised alarm" about Irizarry's appointment and "question how anyone convicted in the assault on American democracy could be trusted for such a sensitive role in the U.S. government." They were forced to voice these concerns anonymously, because the administration has a reputation for vindictive retribution against anyone who speaks out against regime decisions. Irizarry will be working inside the office's irregular warfare and counterterrorism section despite having zero experience for the role. His only "qualification" is that he's a MAGA loyalist who sought to destroy our sacred tradition of a peaceful transfer of power. For the Trump administration, that's good enough. The section that he'll be working in deals with embassy security and hostage rescue among other duties. According to two people familiar with the work speaking to the Post, it's some of the "most delicate that the Pentagon perform." When a crisis strikes, he will be totally unprepared. “In the case of rescue/extraction missions, it can place our special operators in some of the most complex and dangerous environments we ask of them,” said one source. “To put someone so junior and new to DOD, and with such a checkered background, into such a sensitive portfolio raises serious questions for leadership.” This hiring represents a convergence between two destructive Trumpian trends: hiring utter incompetents and politicizing nonpartisan institutions. This administration routinely hires people who are completely incapable of doing their jobs because they only care about MAGA loyalty. The result is a weakened, ideologically poisoned government.
