Eurostat housing data shows Ireland has 90% people living in houses, while the average in flats was 48% across the EU in 2024. Is this why we have a housing crisis in Ireland? We also expect to stay in houses when we go on holidays to Irelands rural and remote areas
EU_Eurostat@EU_Eurostat

In the EU in 2024, 51% of the population lived in a house, while 48% lived in a flat.🏡🏠 Highest shares of the population living in a house in: 🇮🇪Ireland (90%) Lowest in: 🇪🇸Spain and 🇱🇻Latvia (35%) 👉 link.europa.eu/yXGnMy

Lets make a real comparison. How many groups of holiday cottages built in coastal and rural Sligo,Donegal and Leitrim no longer in tourism market. Now permanently occupied, on council or ARP contracts. Its a housing issue, caused by planning issues and not tourism
Letterkenny Cath Qtr@LkennyCathQtr

Both Leitrim & Donegal has more @Airbnb properties available than residential accommodation, research has shown.662 Airbnbs are advertised in Donegal, compared with 27 homes to rent long-term while Leitrim has 87 short-term properties & 7 residential homes tinyurl.com/mwcprcst

Sligo’s local Cllr’s understand the importance of Self-catering from castles, to cottages and glamping the rural economy. Unfortunately central Government are planning to close self-catering in Sligo and other towns with a population above 20,000. independent.ie/regionals/slig…

Government stated there were over 32,000 self-catering properties in the Irish Market and Housing Charity now states its 8600 units. We need a Register for STR for Clear data. We are a tourism offering - not a longterm rental option- so no comparison rte.ie/radio/radio1/c…

Comparing a snapshot from platforms Daft and Airbnb is not clear data. Galway has 7000 (18.7%) empty buildings, 1000 derelict properties, 5000 holiday homes not used for STR, 2000 self-catering properties. Need data on the number of unfinished estates, void social housing🧵

@cynimhurchu @ISCFederation No facilities for the people living there all year round not to mind tourism. The few self catering houses are block booked for same people year on year for peak times. No food between October and March really. Local Siopa under pressure to survive.

Tralee to Cloghane village on the Dingle Peninsula, no hotels and only a handful of guest houses. Yet that local economy is sustained by tourism. Bars, restaurants, water sports, boat tours, all create jobs. Tourists stay in short term lets now. It is about balance

Stop blaming Self-catering for the housing crisis. Data is essential, with a Register for STR giving clear data on self-catering. No data on Ghost STR properties longterm occupied. Empty properties - HSE 230 buildings, OPW 776 buildings, Derelict buildings 20,000+😡
