@anccpt And I get where you're coming from too. But isn't whether something is a 'big deal in the media' dependent on expectations? I'm curious about the thinking behind this perception. Aren't all deaths in combat equally tragic?

@Jwheelwright We are not Russians. That's a very different culture. I get where you're coming from, but look at the notable female combat casualties over the last few years. It's a big deal in the media when on eof our women dies in combat. Now imagine it times thousands

@anccpt Or this might become normalised? And doesn't it depend very much on the conflict and the context in which it happens? I'm thinking about the women in the Soviet Red Army during WW2 where casualties were incredibly high and they became potent figures of propaganda.

@Jwheelwright Because it hasn’t happened yet. Women have been killed in combat, but not in large numbers. When there’s are hundreds or thousands of young women in their 20’s coming home in boxes, the public won’t stand for it.

@anccpt If the country's psyche will be damaged when women are killed in action, why hasn't this happened throughout history? Why is worse for a woman to be killed in a combat role than in a medical, communications, transport role? Why is front line fighting unique?

/9 While women are capable of warfare, and can and should serve, the country’s psyche will be badly damaged when we start seeing our young wonen come home in large numbers in boxes under folded flags.

@janeyellene I think there are still vestiges of the Toll Gate which is currently getting a much needed revamp. Thanks for sharing this.

@billric36028987 So exciting to see Penticton news here Bill. Perhaps I should alert my relations to this impending centennials? Suggest a dance at Peach on the Beach, a few songs along Main, canoeing on the lake?

insufficient fuss being made about the impending centennial birthdays of Alexis Smith (b. 06/08/21, Penticton) and Deanna Durbin (b. 12/04/21, Winnipeg). surely there are bridges, dams, elementary schools, and hospitals that would benefit from renaming! i have so much work to do!

This was exciting. The first time I’ve gone into Tesco, picked up a magazine and found an article of mine in there! My first article for @HistoryofWarMag looking at five adventurous women, who hid their gender and fought in battles around the world ⚔️

Inclusion of international aviation and shipping emissions in the UK's climate law is a hugely significant step, which environmental campaigners have fought hard for. It should mark the beginning of the end of the era of fossil-fuelled flying bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politi…

On June 5, 1942, young Mary Evelyn Briggs and Edna Marie Hydel were shocked to find a man climbing out of their bedroom window. The two girls were unharmed, although each of them was missing a lock of hair. That man would come to be known as The Phantom Barber of Pascagoula.

@Historiann It's such an exquisitely sad childhood and the shock of losing her family so quickly. Lots of reference to cold as I remember.

So excited that 'Sisters in Arms' -- the unknown history of female warriors from the Amazons to those battling MeToo campaigns today -- is published in Italian by @Odoyaeditore later this month.
