Are you considering home education for the new school year? Remember school is not compulsory. Home education isn’t school at home, it can be anything you want and the child needs it to be. #homeeduk #learnathome

On Tuesday 16th May there will be a private member’s bill introduced, seeking to legislate the registration of children educated outside of school. This bill would badly impact the home educating communities and how they operate. Find out more here scraptheschoolsbill.co.uk

@UncagedDove @melodyjane666 My son is very sensitive to being quizzed or put on the spot and completely shuts down. This is one of the reasons we #homeeducate. I can support him making progress without any obvious assessment. Testing and monitoring would destroy him and then they'd force him into school.

@melodyjane666 To me, a major advantage of #HomeEducation is that it doesn't rely on progression at all. You can jump in at the deep end and fill in backwards, or skip the basics to do something advanced, or never go beyond a cursory look at something uninteresting. Testing would spoil that.

Though, you did touch on something important: fining and jailing parents isn't going to make their children attend #school, if school is not suiting those children. We need to overhaul #attendance law and end these incentives, not threaten #HomeEducating families as well.

Putting law-abiding minority groups on a register is highly controversial, and there are data from various 'consultations' to back this. The current laws, if followed, work well. Plus there are huge - and genuine - data privacy concerns. Are you reflecting this in your coverage?

You see this so often: the legislation exists to address something but the relevant services fail to act. Government: "we're very worried about illegal schools" Ofsted (who have power in this area) "............" Government: "I know lets have a register of children not in school"

@UncagedDove I've said before that everytime you make your haystack bigger it gets harder and harder to find the needle. Unnecessarily adding more children to lists and registers doesn't make LAs jobs easier - if anything it will make it even harder for overstretched services to manage.

Yet bigots who want #HomeEducated children checked up on 'just in case' don't care about the thousands of school children who are KNOWN TO BE AT RISK but get no attention because social services are stretched too thin. #FairHearing4HomeEd

@baronbm @NickFletcherMP "Home Schooling" was used by government to describe the pandemic lockdown learning for children studying from home while still on the school roll. (Elective) Home Education is the correct legal term in the UK and in many/most cases looks very different to traditional "schooling"

@LornaWillimott but you could be cooking anything at home...how do we know what you're serving up, it might not be the same as everyone else cooks. You might not be following the recipe properly. You might not be cooking in the kitchen or you might be cooking at unusual times.

If this was any other group of people a compulsory register without any evidence or conviction of wrong doing would be unthinkable. Register of people who don't attend church? Register of people who cook their meals themselves instead of eating out?
FreeBird@UncagedDove

Worth noting the existing balance is in-line with other law. No other group has to register the details of their family life with the government, nor do the authorities normally get involved without evidence of a problem. Only #HomeEducation attracts this kind of state overreach!

.@NickFletcherMP Years of consultations and surveys and murmurings in @UKParliament. When will we be left in peace to parent and enjoy time with our children instead of having to constantly defend against needless meddling with something that works? #HomeEducation

I so agree with you! @NickFletcherMP #HomeEducation The DfE needs to take a long hard look at their offering. They've forgotten who they are meant to serve, and what century and decade we live in. If anyone is to be scrutinised, start there! #PetitionsDebate

@FairHearing4HE @NickFletcherMP The challenge here and the next battle will be the definition of "proper" training. To us, it's obvious that home ed community should be co-creators and partners - will the government see it this way??

.@NickFletcherMP Unless #HomeEducation officers receive proper training (with input from EHE community), they will always get it wrong. You can't put under-trained officials in a position of power (i.e. a register) over law-abiding citizens and expect it to go well.

@FairHearing4HE @NickFletcherMP The number of parents questioning the current obsession that Government and the @ChildrensComm have for 100% school attendance is growing online. The outright threats and abuse they and their children receive from schools and LAs are being noticed and discussed.

@NickFletcherMP #homeeducation #PetitionsDebate The government may be under-estimating the strength of feeling home educating and other parents have about the increasing power-grab by the State. We have seen how much the system cares about children and voting with our feet.
