What does it actually mean to be an 'indigenous Canadian' in 2026?
Some Indian tribes only reached parts of the Prairies or BC in the 1800s.
Meanwhile, plenty of families of French, Scottish, or English descent have lived continuously in Canada since the early 1600s, longer than some bands have been in their current territory.
So: Is 'indigenous' strictly about who was here 'first' (and how far back does that clock start)? Is it cultural continuity and connection to the land? Legal status under the Indian Act/Constitution? Or something else?

In a harsh climate your main focus is on survival, and it's too risky to invest in projects that could fail.
