The fire code is changing in January and calls like this show exactly why.   At approximately 08:30 yesterday morning, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a 9-1-1 call from a resident in a two-storey townhome in the 0 to 100 block of Briggs Avenue reporting that their Carbon Monoxide (CO) alarm had activated. Firefighters arrived to find the resident waiting safely outside in fresh air. As crews approached the home, they detected a strong smell of natural gas and recorded Carbon Monoxide readings of 35 Parts Per Million (PPM) at the front door before making entry. Enbridge Gas was dispatched to the scene.   A full assessment was completed and Firefighters recorded readings of 45 PPM of CO throughout the home. High pressure fans were set up to ventilate the structure while crews worked to identify the source. Both attached townhomes were checked and no CO was found inside either unit. The investigation confirmed that the furnace had failed and was producing levels of approximately 3000 PPPM of CO, most of which was exhausting outside. Enbridge decommissioned the furnace and crews cleared the scene at 09:47.   A reminder that on January 1, 2026, the Ontario Fire Code will require every home with a fuel burning appliance, fireplace, or attached garage to have Carbon Monoxide alarms near every sleeping area and on every floor. Working alarms save lives.   #OttNews

‼️‼️‼️PLEASE SHARE‼️‼️‼️ Today one of our Sector Chiefs encountered an 11-year-old skating on unsafe ice at Mahogany Landing in Manotick and asked him to leave due to open water. We’ve seen many community groups raise concerns about kids on unsafe ice. Please stay off the ice. No ice is safe ice. 🚫🧊🚫 #OttNews

Lint isn’t harmless fluff. It’s fuel for a fire! Clean your dryer’s lint trap after every load and check the vent often. Stay safe, stay smart. #FireSafety #HomeTips 🔥

📸 OFS Photographer Jean Lalonde

Our Structural Collapse Team was dispatched after a vehicle struck a home yesterday afternoon in #Ottawa.   At approximately 16:46, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a call from our partners at @OttawaPolice requesting assistance for a vehicle that had driven into a home in the 100 block of Queen Mary Street. Firefighters arrived on scene four minutes after being dispatched and confirmed a cargo van had driven through a cedar hedge and into the garage of a two-storey single-family home.   The driver, who was the only occupant of the van, was not trapped and was able to  exit the vehicle. Crews shut off the vehicle, entered the home to check for any hazards, and confirmed that no residents were inside after speaking with the homeowner who arrived shortly after.   Structural damage was identified on the west side of the garage and the house. The Structural Collapse Team was dispatched to evaluate the damage and found that a central I-beam was no longer supported after the van had pushed out a two-ply 2x4 post. The team inspected the interior and confirmed there was no additional damage to the main structure or the second floor above the garage. Crews used cribbing and two large 4x4 wedges to support the I-beam until the van could be removed. Once the vehicle was cleared, a two-post T-shore was installed to provide proper support for the beam. A City of Ottawa engineer was called to the scene, and hydro crews disconnected power to the home as a safety precaution. Caution tape was placed around the garage area before we cleared the scene. #OttNews 📸 OFS Photographer Jean Lalonde
