We will be publishing this weekly summary every Monday morning. If you've followed us long enough you'll know this is the rebirth of an old feature :)
Open Electricity@OpenNem
Open Electricity weekly summary for NEM (23 Mar - 29 Mar 2026). Renewables proportion at 44.2% on 4,216 GWh of total generation. explore.openelectricity.org.au/energy/nem/

battery (10.2GW) has already overtaken hydro (8GW) in capacity - it'll likely hit a regional daily milestone first, then NEM-wide daily, then regional weekly, and so on. I'm sure somebody could model when - we have the full facility planning pipeline in our API! explore.openelectricity.org.au/capacity/nem/?…

@cat240359 thanks for noticing - WEM data is usually delayed but it shouldn't be showing beyond the last point. will be fixing

Victoria too 100% rooftop solar (according to Open Electricity).
And yet, AEMO shows Victoria running on 60% coal and has been all day.
Perhaps @OpenNem needs to show coal curtailed, not just large scale solar and wind?

@DaVinciCapital Good question! There's a lot of battery due to come online in the next few years - you can see their expected capacities and the timeline on our facilities list: openelectricity.org.au/facilities?vie…

@OpenNem when is battery discharge expected to be above hydro?

@johnson_wrjohn1 thanks for this - some good notes here, i'll take a moment to go through them all

First of all, OpenElectricity is a very useful and highly functional application! Thankyou for providing it.
I use it a couple of times a week to download data for analysis. However, there are a few items I think would improve it further:
1) I find your new Facilities page confusing. You list statuses as commissioning and operating. However, there is no explaination as to what this actually means.
- Is a "commissioning" unit actually producing? This is important to know when calculating capacity factors.
- perhaps you could have a selection "Contributing to Demand" or "To Grid"?
2) It would be great if this page included rooftop solar as well. This is currently available on the "Tracker" page but requires picking the correct period. If it was available on the facilities page, I could see the current capacity at the time.
3) The "Facilities" page shows "Battery" under Technology, but only shows the Power (MW) rating. This is not really that useful.
- the Energy rating (MWh) is MUCH more important.
- We still need the Power rating, but given the choice, Energy is the most important one.
4) Having more days of 5-min data would be very useful. Ideally, a full 31 days would be fantastic. But even 10 days would be a major upgrade.
- for most of the analysis that I do, anything longer than 5-minutes is not of much use.
5) On the "Tracker" page, the "Avg Value" heading is very confusing.
- It is used by many as the "Cost of Production" which is incorrect.
- It is the Gross Income earned by the generation type during the period.
- It is a function in part of the time of day the generator produces as well as the duration.
- It should be named as such (Gross Income) with an explaination provided.
6) It would be great to have a table like this on the Facilities page:
Keep up the great work..... It is much appreciated.👍

@undbtlydoubtful we used to have one but it was a cumbersome way to get feedback. how about taking a screenshot and writing a note?
English

@OpenNem Can we have a "what I'd fix on this page" button?

If you're in Melbourne, Nik (@dir) will be speaking tomorrow evening at the Clickhouse meetup on the Open Electricity platform and backend. 5pm at State of Grace on King Street - RSVP here: meetup.com/clickhouse-mel…

@_Gaffa_ we're getting errors from AEMO upstream - clearing this out at the moment
