5. None of this means the law is perfect, or that regulators always get it right. But it does mean that durable digital asset innovation is going to be built by people who assume statutes, process, and institutions matter - and design accordingly. Tweet credit: @Amanda_S_Wick

4. The meltdown we're seeing is the collision between those two worldviews: the belief that crypto could permanently live in an exception zone, and the reality that mature financial infrastructure ultimately has to operate inside a rule-of-law framework, not alongside it.

🧵Crypto is learning some hard lessons about the rule of law today, particularly the gap between political vibes and the way legal systems actually work.

One of the things lost in this debate is: 1 - This is really big banks wanting to continue paying 0% on deposits and facing competition from smaller firms, both in the fintech space (@Revolut, @CashApp, etc.), in the crypto space with stablecoins, and in the banking space (e.g. @dart_bank, @bankonroger). 2 - Banks accidentally ended up with a payments system monopoly because of technological development. This was never contemplated from a regulatory standpoint, and wasn't the case in 1970. It's unclear why, given we de-regulated everything else from the 1933 act, we'd give them protective treatment here. 3 - The bank trades are often openly lying in their arguments on the hill and in public. To be fair, I know with certainty their view does not reflect all banks, but these are truly dishonest arguments that enable the laziest, most anti-consumer members while actually harming the ones that want to build cutting edge products. What we need is just an open playing field that doesn't unduly favor incumbents or scale, and creates room for truly innovative products and leaders, from @coinbase to @usat, from @jack to @JillCastilla, to grow the economy and deliver value to consumers. That doesn't mean regulatory capture. That doesn't mean artificial restrictions on trade. It means a free market, where everyone can compete fairly, and where the best products, firms, and people will win.

Banks earn $1,440 per household every year just for letting you use your own money in the payments system. And they want Congress to make sure stablecoins can't compete. Calling introspection ‘modern’ is wild; Marcus Aurelius and Socrates would disagree. Dismissing introspection isn’t neutral; it’s a lack of self-examination by people with huge influence. To media that’s “building power for working people,” call BS, don’t just platform it. 👎🏻
More Perfect Union@MorePerfectUS

Billionaire Marc Andreessen says he has "zero" introspection, and that the idea itself is a modern invention.
